Finding my sea legs

Approaching the new world

Cal was pale and very agitated. We’d spent a couple of nights, mostly in our room but occasionally in the bar, chatting to fellow travellers and citizens of Cthonica, the city we were heading towards. Strangely, I was enjoying the lack of natural light and somehow felt at ease knowing that we’d escaped the blazing sun of our homeland, and with little else to do but remain cautious it was easy to forget the pressure of any predestined fortune that may await us. Though I’d gradually woken later each day, I’d spend my time continuing my exploration of the ship in solitude. Silk had made several comments about watching my back since we’d seen the mysterious tribesman watching us. I’d later seen him around the ship, sometimes with others, but I’d stayed out of sight. As everyone on board seemed to be armed, we’d taken to wearing our weapons and had, so far, not aroused any unwanted suspicions.

“I hate to say it, but I need to feed.” Cal’s sudden announcement stopped all movement in the room; the idea made my stomach rumble despite the ample meal I’d eaten about an hour before. Silk looked up sharply but said nothing. Laz scratched at his beard and mused.

“There aint no critters ‘round here to be keeping that thirst ‘o yours in check.” Laz somehow had a way of knowing things he shouldn’t know. I repeatedly felt that there may actually be some truth to what he’d told me about his calling. Silk stood from her bed and started pacing once again. Then she turned to Cal when an idea struck.

“There’s got to be some live animals on board for them to cook. Would that keep you going until we get off the boat?” Cal seemed interested, if a little ashamed. He thought for a moment. Laz squinted his rheumy eyes as if concentrating, then sighed.

“Black is comin’ y’all, season’s changin’.” As was often the case, Laz’s interjection went ignored.

“Worth a try.” Cal pulled open the door and turned back to us. “You best stay here an’ I’ll see what I can find.”

Suddenly, two enormous hands appeared from behind Cal and an immense man in worn travel clothes pulled him violently through the door. I saw a gun appear, levelled at Cal. Without thinking, I leapt forward to find the first person I could with my hatchet held high.
